What is Daelyug's Tales?

Daelyug's Tales is a cooperative puzzle adventure game in third person, inspired by It Takes Two and Tiny Brains. Two players have to cooperate and complete levels in a fantastical medieval world inspired by Korea.

Players can embody the spirit named 'Seoli' or the shaman named 'Kwan Su Wa' (whom we all call 'Su'). Each character has their own abilities that complement each other to create interesting combos for completing levels.

Su uses her magic fan to create wind and push enemies or objects.
Seoli uses his spirit powers, such as embodying objects to take control of them and using his freezing breath to freeze enemies or objects.

My Job in the Project

In the project, I was in charge of the level design. I created the first part of the village and was responsible for making its design consistent with the lore and context, as well as incorporating the tutorial to introduce the essential elements of the gameplay, such as the Spirit Embody and the shaman's wind blast.

In the project, we were three level designers, so the map had many versions before the final form:

After the paper map and feedback, we started the block out phase, and I was in charge of the first part of the map and creating modules:

After several days of work and iterations, we finally got the final version that we were happy with. For the first part of the map, I tried to create a progressive difficulty by introducing elements step by step, with a fight or a puzzle used as a test for players. I worked on the tutorial sequence, the puzzle section, and the first fight.

During this time, I also created the boss arena, which was cut from the project. For the boss arena, I was inspired by a Diablo 3 boss fight named "Belial, Lord of Lies"

For the boss, I wanted to use mechanics seen in the previous level, like the water that players have to freeze, explosive barrels, windmills, etc. The boss was designed to have three different phases based on a Korean funeral statue named Kkoktu, which gave our boss its name.

The last thing that survived from the boss is the boss arena intro cinematic, which will be at the end of the vertical slice.
